Elementary Education
Uganda
is the best place to practice James 1:27 (to look after widows
and orphans). The HIV/AIDS
epidemic left about 2 million orphans (according to Uganda Government
Records). The government, International Organizations
and poor extended families have all contributed to the effort
of caring for these vulnerable children. However, thousands
are living a hopeless life, roaming the streets of every town
in Uganda. Most of these children are found naked and
eating the trash that they find on the streets and engaging
in the same acts that killed their parents. Some of them
live with infected family members whose future is limited to
only a few more years.
BBT,
in 1991, began to contribute to the solution of the orphan problem.
By 1993, The Good Samaritan Centre was founded to care
for the most needy and vulnerable. It is located 6 miles
from Kampala City, the Capital of Uganda. Good
Samaritan is a place where the hopeless become hopeful, encouraged,
loved and are provided for. In this center is a
large school, teaching 914 orphans; a Community Clinic, serving
over 1,000 families; an Orphanage Home for the most affected
orphans (120 now, and 420 on the waiting list).
BBT
is currently building a large 6-story dormitory to accommodate
the orphans, to hold classes and to house a computer lab/school
and a library. So far, the third floor is being started.
It
currently costs $1 per day to care for each child. BBT
provides school uniforms (as many of these children do not have
a full set of clothing), scholastic materials, 20 teachers'
salaries, medical care and food.
COSTS
- Teachers' monthly salaries =
$200 each
- Clinic Nurses monthly salaries
= $200 each
- Scholastic Materials (monthly)
= $9 each student
- Construction Work: cement,
iron, timber & professional services for each 109 x 50
floor of the dorm, estimated at $46,000
- Clinic supplies/medication (monthly)
= $150 for the children
